World wind Orchestras. Chapter X. Air Lines

Concert Band of Swiss Air Lines

The only start-up capital the group had was its common interest in marching music. They had no instruments of their own and no money with which to purchase them. The main concern of the management at that time was how the Musik could arrange rehearsals and performances without band members losing any time at work. An understandable position considering that World War II was still relatively fresh in the minds of many people. In spite of the fact that the era of the propeller aircraft was about to be succeeded by the introduction of jets in civilian aviation.
A bit breakthrough occurred in the mid - 1960s and the Swissair Musik's performances were too good to be ignored. Concerts performed in civilian pants and baggage-handler shirts, no less. Their growing renown prompted the company to provide the Musik with uniforms, after which they began to perform in publish. Their first concerts were at the Fêtes de Genève and the Neuenburg wine festival. From then on, things went upward in a big way. Thanks to the quality of the music and the emphasis that was place on marches, the Swissair Musik was a popular attraction at larger parades. They appeared at the Lugano and Hallau wine festivals, at the harvest festival in Germany's Pfalz region and at the annual festivals in Bienne and Porrentruy in French-speaking Switzerland. The carefully cultivated contacts to both the Dutch Navy and Rumanian Army bands also produced positive dividends.
A change of conductors at the beginning of 1978 heralded a shift to concert appearances. Where the Swissair Musik was once heard primarily on the streets, it now focused on festival and concert halls. As a result the appearances gained a showy atmosphere. The Musik was awarded first place for presentation at the first two such concert competitions in St. Gallen.
After the grounding of Swissair we where able to find a new partnership with our new "Swiss International Airr Lines". That gave us our new name " Swiss Band - Concert Band of Swiss International Air Lines" or in short "Swiss Band".
It's impossible to catalogue the first 49 years of the Swissair Musik / Swiss Band here. Suffice it to say that numerous appearances, including in cities as diverse as Lyon, Bourges, Strasbourg, Hanover, Munich, Linz, Budapest, Amsterdam, Chicago, Shannon and Dublin, along with many appearances for radio and television, have spread the fame of this group internationally.
The new CD "Live in concert... with guests" is the eights in a series that dates back to 1982. This recording is sure to follow in the footsteps of its successful predecessors.
